Avila: Rest in Peace Fr. Víctor Martín Fuentes, OP.

With sorrow, we announced the demise of Fray Víctor Martín Fuente, OP., who for a number of years bear patiently pain of the serious illness affecting his health.

 

Fray Víctor Martín Fuente, OP, was born in Espinosa de Villagonzalo, Palencia, on November 22, 1942. He completed the years of high school at La Mejorada, Olmedo, Valladolid and Arcas Reales, from 1953 to 1959.

Having completed the secondary education he was accepted into the novitiate at St. Dominic´s priory, Ocaña, Toledo in 1959. At the end of the Novitiate, he made his first religious profession on August 5, 1960, in the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary.

 

After the novitiate Fray Víctor was assigned to the Priory San Peter Martyr, Madrid where he began the institutional studies of Philosophy 1960 to 1964. Then he moved to the Priory of Santo Tomas, Ávila where he took up four years of Theology and was ordained to the priesthood on July 7, 1968.

 

Because on that year the Students were moved to St. Peter Martyr in Madrid he was assigned to that priory where he completed the five years theology and obtained the degree of Licentiate in Theology.

 

Fray Victor initiate his pastoral ministry as a Parochial Vicar in the Parish Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Conde de Peñalver, Madrid from 1970 to 1973. Then he was appointed Parish Priest of the Parish Jesus Obrero, Madrid from 1974 to 1979.

 

Then his life began to have a missionary experience and was sent to the vicariate of the Province in Venezuela where he was elected Prior of St. Dominic´s Priory, in San Cristobal for one term 1981-1984. There he began teaching theology courses at the Seminary of Tachira and later in Barquisimeto. Likewise, he assumed a teaching position at the Catholic University of Tachira for two years.

After his term as prior he was appointed Parish Priest of the Holy Spirit Parish in Barquisimeto from 1985 to 1987 but relinquished this position when he was elected Regional Prior in the Vicariate of the Province in Venezuela from 1988-1992.

Later he was assigned to Barinas and combined the role of teacher at the Colegio Arzobispo Méndez, Barinas with the ministry of preaching, 1992-1993. Having been appointed Master of Students 1996-1998 he moved to Caracas where he was later given the responsibility of promotor of vocations in 1999 and continued been very active in preaching retreats across the country.

In 2008 he was assigned to Chile where he was elected Prior, unfortunately, affected by severe herpes he returned to Spain in the hope of finding a remedy to the effects of the sickness that was to be with him for many years.

 

After a short stay in our Priory in Valladolid, he was assigned to the Priory of St. Thomas, Avila where he worked he was active in the ministry until for health reasons he was confined to the infirmary. Having undergone surgery and other treatments, he died in peace on August 22, 2020, in Ávila. His remains, after the funeral mass in the conventual Church on August 23, will be transferred to the local cemetery where he will await the resurrection of the death together with the brothers who are buried there.

 

We join in prayer the brothers of our community in St. Thomas, Avila, and the members of his family. May our brothers rest in peace and receive the reward of his commitment to preaching for so many years.
