The New Provincial For The Province Of Our Lady Of The Rosary

The Brother Rubén Martínez Ortega, OP has been elected Provincial of the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary today August 5, 2021. He succeeds Fr. Bonifacio Garcia Solis, OP, becoming the 116 Prior Provincial of the Province.

Brother Rubén was born in Mazariegos, (Palencia, Spain) on 23 August, 1962. He completed his High School studies at the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Valladolid (1972-1980). He entered the novitiate at Santo Domingo Priory of Ocaña (Toledo, Spain) (1981-1982), emitting his first vows on 21 September, 1982. He completed his institutional studies at the Provincial Studium of San Pedro Martir in Madrid from 1980-1987. He was ordained to the priesthood on 27 June, 1987.

After his English language studies in Edinburgh, Scotland UK, he returned to Spain to fulfill his military service from 1988-1989. he was assigned to Taiwan where he worked from 1989-2013.

Aside from his pastoral ministries in various Taiwanese speaking Parishes of the Vicariate, he was elected as Vicar Provincial of the mission from 2001-2010 and served as the National Coordinator of the Dominican Family in Taiwan. After taking a sabbatical year, he was chosen to be one of the founding friars of the mission in Timor Leste where he served as the Vicar of the Provincial in the mission and house superior of Saint Dominic’s House in Dili (Timor Leste). He speaks fluent English, Taiwanese, Portuguese and Tetun.

He was elected by the Provincial Chapter at the Real Monasterio de Santo Tomas on 5 August, 2021. The MO Fr. Gerard Timoner III, OP has already confirmed his election. Fr. Ruben is the 116 Prior Provincial of the Province.

The brethren of the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary is filled with joy with the election of the new Prior Provincial and we fervently ask God to send His Holy Spirit upon him, assisting him in this ministry of animating the brethren in the mission and leading us in be faithful to the Gospel.
